The author has a distinct voice that has the means to resonate on a personal level, not to mention a descriptive, almost lyrical way of setting the scene. It isn't an approach often seen in books geared toward a sport, even when there is at least one other plot line to follow alongside everything about the actual physical aspects of the given sport or a specific character's athletic journey and how it intertwines with their personal life.
